The information below relates to Post-Completion OPT. For information about Pre-Completion OPT please speak with International Education staff.

Eligibility

After attending school full time for at least two consecutive semesters as an F-1 student in good academic standing, you may apply for OPT.  You are not eligible to work until you receive notification of your OPT authorization card and the authorized start date on the card is reached. You must take the following steps to apply for OPT:

  1. Attend an OPT workshop within one year of applying for OPT.  
  2. Assemble all of the documents for your OPT application, including the .
  3. Schedule an with International Education. If you have questions, schedule an OPT Precheck.
  4. Scan and email all of your documents together to International Education. After your appointment, you will receive your new OPT I-20.  
  5. Send your complete application to the appropriate USCIS Lockbox within 30 days of your OPT recommendation date shown on your I-20.
  6. Once you are approved for OPT and received your EAD card, update your employment information on the online.

Travel During OPT 

You must receive a travel signature every six months for international travel while you are on OPT.  Please see the procedures for requesting a travel signature

After OPT

If you decide to depart the U.S. and end your OPT early, please contact International Education. Students who work throughout OPT (without reaching their 90 days of unemployment threshold) have several options at the end of their OPT authorization period.
